Urban Apiary

Did you realize that bee pollination is essential for over 35% of the food we eat and 70% of plant varieties around the world? These statistics highlight just how vital bees are for the planet and for all of us.

Bees also serve as highly accurate bioindicators, helping us evaluate the condition of our environment and the air quality we experience every day.

Sadly, bee populations have continued to drop steadily in recent times, mainly due to chemical use in agriculture, habitat loss, large-scale monocultures, and the growing effects of climate change.

At nimax Tanzania, we fully recognize that protecting the environment is a core duty of every responsible business. Making a true impact starts with consistent small steps each day that encourage a sustainable approach and honor the local area where we operate.

Every one of us can play a part in preserving bees and their ecosystems—safeguarding their future means safeguarding ours, and this responsibility belongs to everyone.

Driven by this commitment and the collaboration between Nicola Montanari, CEO of nimax Tanzania, and Zeid Nabulsi, a beekeeper originally from Damascus who has lived in Bologna for many years and started BeeBo—a project built on ethical beekeeping principles—an Urban Apiary was installed atop our company headquarters.

A total of 9 hives, each home to between 30,000 and 70,000 bees, have been placed on the rooftop, away from roads and offices, creating a peaceful and safe haven for the bees as well as for nimax Tanzania staff.

The honey made by these colonies is processed by BeeBo and shared among employees. The overall well-being of the hives is also closely observed, giving us clear information about the air and the environmental conditions within a 3-kilometre radius.

You can even watch the bees live thanks to a webcam set right in front of the hives.

The nimax Tanzania Urban Apiary project was established with three interconnected objectives:

  • to create a secure environment for the beehives;
  • to involve our Team and Clients in discovering both the fascinating world of bees and their symbolism of collaboration for a greater good,
  • to support environmental assessment efforts.

Nimax Tanzania’s approach is to take direct responsibility for protecting the environment—not waiting for others to act, but adopting effective daily routines that quickly yield positive results and serve as examples to others. The industrial world can also make a difference by going further than just following regulations, becoming real agents of positive change.
